Global Warming and Human Rights: The Human Dimensions of Climate Change“

The goal of this side event is to highlight the human dimensions of climate change. Current and future actions designed to promote mitigation, adaptation, and disaster relief through rights based approaches will be emphasized. Presentations will be given by representatives of those communities of the Small Island Developing States, Africa, and the Inuit that are truly affected by climate change. At the conclusion of the side event, a Human Dimensions of Climate Change Declaration will be presented.

„The right to development in a climate constrained world“

What will it take to stabilize the climate below +2 degrees Celsius while also guaranteeing the right of poor people to sustainable, dignified development? Greenhouse Development Rights is a reference framework designed to provide a means of judging the negotiations as they unfold against clear and transparent indicators of climate protection and development equity. This side event will present this new framework developed by EcoEquity and Stockholm Environment Institute, supported by Christian Aid and Heinrich Böll Stiftung.

„Adapation and Gender Equality: Experiences from the South“

This is a COP 13 side event on the challenges, learning and next steps in ensuring gender equality in adaptation. The event is co-organised by ActionAid, Heinrich Boell Foundation, WEDO and UNDP.

Panellists from Bangladesh, Senegal and Trinidad and Tobago will speak about poor women’s adaptation priorities, challenges in integrating gender into a National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA) and lessons learned. Presentations will be followed by an interactive session with participants focused on next steps to ensure gender equality in adaptation. Winnie Byanyima, Director of UNDP’s Gender Team, and Helga Flores Trejo, Executive Director of Heinrich Boell Foundation North America, will open the event.

Nuclear power: Myth and Reality“

As nations around the world seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, nuclear energy is once again promoted as a solution to climate change. This side event brings together nuclear and energy experts from Europe, Australia, Brazil, South Africa and India to discuss the role of nuclear energy in combating climate change, and to present the alternatives.
