Am 9. November erschien in der Times Online ein Gastbeitrag von Michael Gorbatschow, dem ehemaligen Präsidenten der Sojetwunion, mit dem Titel: „Tear down this wall! And save the planet“. Wussten Sie, dass der Friedensnobelpreisträger heute Gründer und Präsident des Green Cross International ist und eine internationale Climate Change Task Force leitet?
Die Parallelen zwischen Mauerfall und Klimawandel mögen etwas an den Haaren herbeigezogen erscheinen:
Like 20 years ago, we face a threat to global security and our very future existence that no one nation can deal with alone. And, again, it is the people who are calling for change. Just as the German people declared their will for unity, world citizens are today demanding that action is taken to tackle climate change and redress the deep injustices that surround it. Twenty years ago key world leaders demonstrated resolve, faced up to opposition and immense pressure, and the Wall came down. It remains to be seen whether today’s leaders will do the same.
Aber in seinem Appell and die Staats- und Regierungschefs hat er Recht:
Mr Obama, Mr Hu, Mr Singh, Mr Brown and, back in Berlin, Ms Merkel and her European counterparts: Tear down this wall! For this is Your Wall, your defining moment. You cannot dodge the call of history. I appeal to heads of state and government to personally come to the climate change conference in Copenhagen this December and dismantle the wall. The people of the world expect you to deliver; do not fail them.
Noch gibt es eine Chance, dass Kopenhagen als Wendepunkt und historisches Ereignis von Weltbedeutung in die Geschichte eingehen kann – aber sie wird jeden Tag geringer, den wir abwarten und nicht handeln.
